The Dawn of Design – From the Oldest Stone Tools to Handaxes"

KGA6-A1 O96 175万年前のピック エチオピア、コンソ出土 unifacial trihedral pick 1.75 million years ago Konso, Ethiopia アフリカ、とりわけエチオピアは、人類起源期から人類進化の各段階の、世界を代表する化石記録を産出している。本展示では、日本とエチオピアの研究者の1980年代以来の長年にわたる共同研究の成果に基づき、ホモ属の系統が出現した250万年前ごろからホモ・サピエンスの出現までの人類進化の道筋と石器テクノロジーの発展について展示する。人類化石の展示としては、著名な頭骨化石12点のレプリカ標本を空間配置した系統樹として示す。最古の石器とそれ以後の製作技術のイノベーションを示す展示としては、エチオピアから一時借用の52点の原研究標本を展覧する。これらには、260万年前の世界最古の「オルドワン」石器、175万年前の最古の「ハンドアックス」などの「アシュール石器文化」草創期の石器、その後、石器テクノロジーが段階的に発達し、洗練化・シンボル化してゆく様相、「出アフリカ」を成し遂げた現生人類(ホモ・サピエンス)の石器など、1990年代から近年までに発見された第一級の研究標本を展覧する。 特別展示「最古の石器とハンドアックス―デザインの始まり」  Stone tools are among the first tools man has held in his hand.
